Chelating Picolinaldehyde Hydrazone Amides as Protecting Groups for Carboxylic Acids: Orthogonal Reactivities of Hydrazone Amides and Esters in Hydrolysis

This cover illustrates the feature of the chelating hydrazone amide as a protecting group of carboxylic acids by comparing it to the cloak protecting the traveler in “The North Wind and the Sun”. The amide is robust under basic hydrolytic conditions where esters are hydrolyzed. In contrast, the amide is easily deprotected under mild nickel-mediated conditions where most functionalities including esters are preserved.
